Dominic McKenzie Architects (DMA) is an award-winning architectural firm who have worked across Wimbledon. Featured on Channel 4 and in numerous magazines and newspapers, DMA is making waves across Wimbledon as a team of creatives producing high-quality modern architecture in historic settings. DMA’s designs are contemporary and concept-led, but are always sensitive to the architectural context in which they are constructed. Each project we work on is the result of close collaboration between us and our clients.
The firm was launched by Dominic McKenzie, who had previously worked as project architect on the Accordia housing project in Cambridge, which won the 2008 RIBA Stirling Prize – the UK’s highest award for architecture. He launched Dominic McKenzie Architects in 2011 with a vision of creating exceptional modern designs and living spaces that complement their historic surroundings.
Dominic has been a judge of the National Housing Awards since 2013, and he has written for Wallpaper and Architecture Today. He has been a guest critic at the Architectural Association and the University of Westminster schools of architecture in London, and at the University of Miami in the United States. Between 2011 and 2014 he ran a Master of Architecture unit at Birmingham School of Architecture, where his group was highlighted as a ‘Standout Unit’ in the Architects Journal review of the year.
We specialise in designing beautiful and functional contemporary homes, often within historic settings – Conservation Areas or listed buildings.
In 2014, DMA’s ’Eidolon House’, adjacent to Highgate Cemetery, won the Sunday Times British Homes Award for ‘Best One-Off House below 2500sqft’ and was included as a feature project in the Channel 4 TV series ‘Inside Out Homes’. In 2019 DMA was the recipient of the NLA ‘Don’t Move Improve’ award for ‘Best Historic Intervention’ for their project Tower House.
Our process is simple. Contact us with a potential project and after a few discussions and a site visit, we’ll send you a fee proposal. Accept this and we will arrange the next steps to begin the design process.
From the outset of the project, we work closely with our clients at every stage to agree on the fine details. We cover every aspect of the architectural process, from planning and listed building consent, through producing the construction drawings etc. for tender, reviewing tender proposals and making recommendations for contractors and then throughout the construction period to completion.
During construction, we follow the progress of the work, responding to queries from the site and adjusting the designs as necessary to meet site conditions. Finally, we visit the site to compile a list of snags and ensure the final build meets our design standards.
Our clients move in, we take photos, and we win awards. It’s as simple as that.
